Chemical Study on the Sands in Tottori Dune

Abstract
In this paper the term 'Tottori dune' implies the dunes at Fukube, Suetsune, Hamasaka and Koyama which are widely distributed near the mouth of the Sendai River, We authors studied the chemical component of the sands in these dunes in order to clear up characteristic natures of them, especially on the following standpoints:-
a) Comparison of New dune I with New dune Ⅱ
b) Comparison of New dune with Old dune
c) Distribution of the components in volcanic ashes existing among the dunes
d) Comparison of Black sand "Kurozuna" with Black humus "Kuroboku"
The results are explained briefly as following:-
1. At Hamasaka, New dune I can de distinguished from New dune Ⅱ rather clearly, whereas at Koyama they cannot be distinguished ;from each other so clearly.
2. The extent of weathering of Old dune is rather different as the places and orders of strata differ, but it is always greater than that of New dune in the same places.
3. Distinction of New dune from Old dune can be done with the aid of the mean value of chemical components.
4. The volcanic ashes among the dunes are found to be equivalent to the Daisen volcanic ashes, chemical components being compared with each other.
5. The extent of weathering of Koyama dune is generally greater than that of Hamasaka dune.
6. The value of chemical components of Black humus is so different according to the places where samples are collected that their characteristic natures cannot be made clear by means of mere chemical analysis.
7. The origin of Black sand "Kurozuna" is considered to be due to both weathering products of New dune I and corrupt plants on it.
