On the Engineering Properties of Daisen Loamy Soil

Abstract
This paper describes the results of research carried out on the loamy soil which is widely distributed over Tottori district. Research on the strength properties of the loamy soil has been confined in general to the evaluation and interpretation of friction and cohesion components. The physical tests were carried out to determine the engineering properties of the soil also. The loamy soil is weathered volcanic ash in its origin and deteriorated into aeolian organic soil. The soil is indisposed significantly with the moisture content and a series of experiments has been carried out in order to investigate the influence of moisture content on the shearing strength of specimens of this soil.
In the author's experimental results, the next subjects discussed mainly, and a summary of the writer's views led to the conclution that, (a) the soils differ significantly in engineering properties with the depth of formation and distance from Mt. Daisen, (b) the Daisen-soil can divided into some soil types and a typical one is termed Kuroboku-soil which is organic loamy soil resembled closely to Kanto-loam in its strength properties. (c) In general, the compressibility and shearing strength of the soil is affected significantly by the moisture content.
