Abstract | This study investigated the factors that facilitate improvement in people with selective mutism. We carried out a hierarchical cluster analysis using text mining techniques on 35 case papers dealing with selective mutism. Six clusters were found to promote the improvement of the disorder. Of the six clusters, two were psychological factors, and the remaining four were considered social factors. The results indicate that interventions for psychological factors and environmental adjustments for social factors are needed to promote improvement in patients with selective mutism. It is also suggested that educational support programs be provided for teachers and parents of people with selective mutism. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of a hierarchical cluster analysis to extract new factors for aiding improvement in people with disorders in studies employing the psychosocial approach.
