Abstract | The postglacial transgression produced the Fukuyama Plain by the Seto Inland Sea. Many wooden houses, built on the plain during the Japanese High Economic Growth(1960's and 1970's), have experienced gradual differential settlements due to their own uneven load down on their soft ground. Recent engineering works neighboring the houses and their consequent local land subsidences could promote differential settling. Thus these houses seem to have markedly reduce their rigidities against earthquake shocks. Such a situation seems to be common to a large number of wooden houses built on numerous alluvial plains in the country. Hence integrated survey and suitable measures are requires to secure housing for a great number of residents.
