Abstract
This study aims to examine effects of testing conditions on shear strength characteristics of unsaturated soil. Triaxial compression tests were conducted on a silt sample under three conditions: 1) undrained water and constant volume, 2) undrained water and undrained air, and 3) drained water and drained air. Results showed that the Fredlund et al.’s equation for the shear strength would not be successfully applied to explain the results from triaxial tests; and therefore the equation was modified by replacing the net normal stress, σnet, with Bishop’s effective stress. The modified equation gave an explanation why the cohesion intercept in the τ-σnet diagram is not a linear function of the suction.
