<datacite:description descriptionType="Other">Applicability of transformational grammar to the teaching of English can be seen in: i) both explicit formalization of otherwise ambiguous constructions and re-ordering of pattern drills have been made possible by reflecting 'deep structure'; ii) nominalization transformations have provided clues to pedagogically useful and valid exercises in stylistic variation on the sentence level; iii) transformational grammar is expected to revise our present theory of language learning which is reflected in pattern practice. The revision may imply the change from inductive drills to deductive instructions. The latter, though, is really a borderline case between theoretical formulation and actual application. Unless, however, 'inapplicability' as well is investigated, the question, "Is transformational grammar applicable to the teaching of English ?" will come to reveal both fearless attitude and intellectual laziness on the part of the questioneer. The present paper is designed to discuss 'inapplicability' of transformational grammar to the teaching of English as a foreign language and warn against hasty attempt to apply some of the purely theoretical achievements of transformational grammar to the practical problems of TEEL. The discussion is presented in five sections : (1) Ordering of rules in transformational grammar cannot be expected to reflect the ordering of teaching materials, especially, sentence patterns. (2) Formal correlatives are not always actual correlatives. (3) The notion of main sentence types in transformational grammar is quite different from that of the five sentence types in school grammar. (4) Transformational grammar aims at 'language universals', the Oral Approach emphasizes differences between languages. (5) The notion of 'understanding' in transformational grammar should not be taken to refer to the process involved in 'recognition' in the Oral Approach.</datacite:description>
