To improve this situation, using worksheets based on the Toulmin model, we have been introducing argument activities in lessons of hypothesis formulation for the 1st to 3rd grades junior high school students for three years. By using the same quiz, we compared the changes in the level of understanding between the 1st and 3rd grades. As a result, it was suggested that the 3rd grade students had more diverse components of discussion and attained firmer expressions in the scientific discussion, than the first grade
