内容記述 | Abstract : This paper is a continuation of Sheen (1996a) in which it was argued that the failure of most changes in language teaching to produce the desired results may be explained by the interaction of a number of factors both linguistic and non-linguistic. This paper examines one specific example of this syndrome. That is the rejection of the validity of contractive analysis (now termed cross-linguistic association) input in the language learning process. It is argued that this rejection stigmatisation by its association with the audiolingual method. It is further maintained that it continues to be ignored in the field largely because of the great influence of second language teaching practices in the USA in which heterogeneous classes severely limit the relevance of CA input. However, it is argued on the basis of various research findings that the relevance of cross-linguistic associations needs to be reevalued and input based thereon should to be afforded an important role in language teaching. | |||||
