Negative pressure wound therapy is a treatment that promotes healing by closing the wound and applying negative pressure. It is effective for chronic wounds such as pressure injuries and diabetic foot ulcers. However, the effect of wound dressing thickness on negative pressure has not been fully investigated. In this study, we created a negative pressure measurement model and examined the effect of wound dressing thickness on negative pressure. The results showed that there is a tendency for the thicker dressing group to have low negative pressure with a large discrepancy between the negative pressure setting and the measured value. This indicates that negative pressure may be low under conditions with large wounds and dressings. The difference between the set and measured negative pressures observed in this study was slight, suggesting that the effect of dressing thickness on treatment outcome is limited. On the other hand, it was suggested that the risk of extensive skin injuries with a high risk of exudate or air leakage through the film could be reduced by decreasing the thickness of the wound dressing. These findings suggest that wound size and dressing thickness should be carefully considered when implementing negative pressure wound therapy. |
